A soul does not benefit as it should from the sacrament of confession if it is not humble. Pride keeps it in darkness. The soul neither knows how, nor is it willing, to probe with precision the depths of its own misery. It puts on a mask and avoids everything that might bring it recovery.
– St. Faustina, The Diary, #113
Last month we aired a special episode of Divine Mercy in My Soul in which Fr. Peter Prusakiewicz from Warsaw, Poland, joined Fr. Jacek Mazur and Rick Paolini in studio to discuss St. Faustina and her relationship with the angels.
During the program Fr. Peter emphasized how we need to trust in the Mercy of God, quoting St. Faustina, saying, “It is human to fail, but it is satanic to stay in the state of sin. Don’t distrust in God’s Mercy. Trust in the Divine Mercy.”
This powerful plea gets to the heart of sin and mercy. There’s a difference between staying down when you fall and getting up afterward. This even ties in to the passage above from the Diary of St. Faustina. Pride can keep us from mentioning every mortal sin or from believing that God’s Mercy is really there for us.
Maybe we feel that our sins are too horrific to speak in a church or to a man of God — that somehow mentioning them is tainting the holy. But this stark contrast to what seems “proper” should help us see just how serious God is about granting us His Mercy. He already knows the secrets of our heart, and confessing them aloud makes our failings more real to us — and there’s a humility in acknowledging how we’ve failed and how we need Divine Mercy.
Are there ways in our life that we stay down after falling into sin? Have we given up trying because we know we’ll just fall again? God’s Mercy is for those who don’t deserve it, otherwise it wouldn’t be called “mercy.”
As Fr. Jacek Mazur and Rick Paolini end each episode of Divine Mercy in My Soul, let us also remember to cry out in prayer: Jesus, I trust in You!
This episode of Divine Mercy in My Soul aired at 11 am Eastern on Sunday, February 14, 2016.
